Feeding Our Families - True North Canada

Feeding Our Families

Posted on April 16, 2020 by True North Rockies

As the bears start stretching their legs after a big winter sleep, it has us thinking…how much does a bear actually eat when they wake up? A quick google search informed me that 20,000 calories is the winning answer (pause for reaction!), and apparently despite seeming massive, they are actually a bit skinny for their size – not to mention hungry! I mean, it makes sense. If I had been sleeping for months without as much as a snack, I’d be ready for 5 digits of calories too! While we humans may not need as many calories as a waking bear, we still need substance on our plates. And in times like this, sometimes that’s not necessarily accessible for many within our communities. So let’s shine a light. A light on the families who are helping feed our families – right here in our own community.

Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel

The Fairmont hotels in Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, and Whistler are lending a helping hand to their #fairmontfamilies. Despite the hotels being closed, each hotel is providing 3 meals a day to employees to help support those impacted by furloughs. Every day Banff provides 380-450 meals, Lake Louise provides 400, Jasper provides 310, and Whistler provides 225-250 meals. By my math, that’s roughly 1 million calories a day – or as much as 50 bears! In addition to a warm meal, Lake Louise is also channeling their inner Wellness vibe and are keeping the employee community connected through live-stream yoga, physical distancing campfires, and virtual game nights. Way to go guys!

Fresh Produce in Whistler

Whistler’s Executive Chef Isabel Chung has taken on another feeding-do-good by offering local employees with produce boxes at wholesale prices. The boxes change content every week and have everything from produce to baking supplies, meats, cheese, coffee, and more. Basically, they’re extending the great rates they get for buying at quantity normally and are offering it without any markup or profit. Thank you Chef!

You may have seen our recent article about the do-goods Ryan Reynolds has done for Canadians and American’s alike. He has been helping communities all over the country, including the Edmonton Food Bank, who received a $4,000 donation from the superhero.

And speaking of Food Banks – Ashley Kennedy Photography, a local Jasper photographer, has started on a journey to help capture special moments for locals through ‘front porch photography’. Photos are captured at a safe distance and families can savor their memories together. But the best part – the proceeds are in support of the Jasper Food Bank. Very admirable. Thank you for what you do!
